FIRST LOOK. With a power top, glass dash, leather-wrapped wheel, sculptured upholstery and fold-out swim step, the Chris-Craft Sportster 25 has the feel of a high-end dayboat — and she is one! The legend continues.
PERFORMANCE & FEATURES VIDEO. The 350 Realm is an express design that also has the familiar feel of a center console-type helm and all of the amenities that anglers want. But, she’s more of a family weekender than a hardcore fishboat. The air-conditioned helm can be fully enclosed with drop-down curtains.
PRE-OWNED YACHT. This clean Viking 37 has A/C and she’s fully loaded for offshore angling. The flying bridge is set up in tournament fashion with a center console helm and flanking lounges. In the cockpit, it’s all fishy business with a transom door, transom livewell, bait freezers, rocket launcher and twin mezzanines. Power is twin Cummins QSB 6.7s.
REAL WORLD TESTING. Sharrow propellers continue to prove their claim that they are the greatest prop improvement in nearly 200 years. In this test of a World Cat with twin 300-hp Yamahas, the BoatTEST team verifies the propellers produce shorter times to plane, burn less fuel at cruising speed, extend the range, reduce noise and improve low-speed handling.
THEY DON'T LIKE SAILBOATS. Five orcas relentlessly battered a 39’ (11.8 m) sailboat in a “terrifying” two-hour attack. The British owner says he dropped fire crackers on them and turned off his engine to deter them. The assault didn’t end until the hull buckled and split, he said. Note the rudder is still attached in the photo.
BOAT BUILDING. Among the dozens of tests required for NMMA certification is a fuel tank fire test. All non-integral fuel tanks and their components within the engine room must be certified to withstand a fire test for 2 ½ minutes and then pass a pressure test. See what else is required.
NAVIGATION. A crucial element of modern marine navigation is the use of GPX routes, a standard format for storing and sharing geographical data accepted by most marine navigation devices. Check out this helpful guide on the process of downloading and importing these routes.
