STARTING AT $1,995. The revolutionary Sharrow prop technology that has only been available in expensive stainless steel and Nibral (by Veem) propellers will now be made in relatively inexpensive aircraft-grade aluminum alloy. Ironically, the first test we conducted five years ago on Sharrow props — which proved their remarkable efficiency in the mid-range — was in aluminum.
In fact, all of the early Sharrow props that proved the concept were aluminum, simply because it was so expensive to make these props out of billets of stainless steel. Sharrow tells us that the aluminum props will be made with the latest CNC machines to tolerances impossible to achieve with conventional prop designs using investment casting technology (which dates to the ancient Egyptians).
The new red-anodized aluminum Sharrow props should make old two-stroke outboards as fuel-efficient as modern four-stroke engines, if not more so, in the mid-range. Small, aluminum fishing boats will now be able to get on plane faster with a heavy load. Other advantageous applications include pontoon boats and small fiberglass boats that are relatively heavy and need the thrust Sharrow props can provide without the need for a higher horsepower, more costly engines.
