NOAA Has Proposed Slow-Speed Zones Along the Atlantic Coast
NOAA’s Office of Protected Resources has proposed expanding the 10-knot mandatory speed restriction to vessels 35 feet in length and greater, down from 65 feet and greater under the current regulation. Additionally, the proposal significantly expands the areas in which the speed restriction would be applied, as well as increases the number of days the restrictions would be enforced each year (see above). The reason for the proposed new rules is to help prevent the extinction of the remaining 370 North Atlantic Right Whales during their calving season. More...
