Kayaking looks fun and easy – the only trouble is, it’s not safe. Each week in our “Accidents of the Week” we usually report on one or more deaths by kayak. Almost without exception these fatalities could have been avoided if the victims had been wearing a PFD. Last year 3 people died in the state of Rhode Island alone. Yesterday the state Department of Environmental Management took action. We hope it becomes a trend.

This boat in a former incarnation, first built in 1958, was responsible for eventually moving the USCG into creating a U.S. Federal law requiring that all boats 20’ (6.09 m) and smaller with a 2-hp engine or greater, float level if swamped. Thousands of lives have been saved as a result. Find out about the current version of our #1 Hero boat.
