In 2014, Bob Denison, president of Denison Yachting, started facilitating yacht transactions with Bitcoin. His firm now handles other cryptocurrencies as well and has been involved in 10 transactions over the years. Find out how it all works in this video interview...
Harris’s impressive new Grand Mariner series has three models: 230, 250 and 270. They are all triple-toon designs that can have from 90 to 400-hp single outboard Mercury engines, depending on the model. (Harris is owned by Brunswick.) They have sculptured fiberglass bulwarks that have eye appeal as well as function, instead of the standard thin metal fencing found on less expensive toons.
We were surprised at the level of fit-and-finish, plush upholstery and upscale details, including an available joystick, on this series. Standard tube diameter is 25" (63.5 cm) but 27" (68.58 cm) pontoons are available. The 27" toons are a $760 upcharge on all three models and we recommend this option for increased buoyance and performance. See our video to learn why we’re so dazzled by this new line. More...
The Turkish-built Sirena brand is growing in popularity in the U.S. The Sirena 58 Coupé is a motoryacht with a low profile that sets her apart from cookie-cutter conventional yachts. It has also garnered her some serious attention from the coastal and inshore cruisers that must contend with low bridges but still want to feel confident when heading offshore. Her low air draft makes the 58 Coupé a worthy candidate for tackling the Great Loop. More...
In addition to the advantages that having a trim-able sterndrive gives the Chaparral 23 Surf over an inboard-powered wakesports boat, she also has a deeper cockpit and bow seating area. Her sunlounge on top of the engine can accommodate two people stretched across for tanning or the hinged forward backrest can be raised to form aft-facing seats with angled backrests. The starboard seat folds up to reveal a nonskid walkway that links the cockpit to the swim platform. More...
Greenline’s 48 Fly has a hybrid bottom design that is an evolution of the company’s displacement hull. It’s streamlined to cruise efficiently at displacement and higher speeds and stabilizers on the running surface enhance the ride. When the situation calls for it, her twin 220-hp Volvo Penta D3 diesel inboards can push the boat to speeds exceeding 20 mph. Slow down to 1200 rpm and 5.8 mph and she’ll cover 1,668 nautical miles. Solar panels on the main cabin roof collect power that can be stored in three lithium-polymer battery packs in the engine room. More...
EdgeWater Boats' 245CC packs composite construction, flotation foam, a lifetime structural hull warranty and lots of fishing and cruising gear into a boat that's trailerable with an 8’6” (2.59 m) beam. Her cockpit is 89 sq. ft. (8.2 sq. m) and has 29” (73 cm) of depth. She’s available with a single outboard or twins up to a total of 400 hp. EdgeWater says she has “more space for people, but still plenty of storage for rods, tackle and tuna.” See other highlights of the boat on the company’s website. Additionally, anyone who wants Capt. Steve to take a closer look, click here...
Ventilation and cavitation can have negative impacts on performance and eventually damage the propellers.
Ventilation and cavitation are two different phenomena that are observed under specific conditions during the rotation of the propeller and understanding the difference between the two is critical. One thing is true for both conditions: a negative impact on the performance of a boat. More...
Dredging has started around the Ever Forward container ship to get it freed from the deep mud.
A massive salvage effort is underway in the northern Chesapeake Bay to free a container ship that ran aground on March 13. Crews are dredging around the ship holding 4,900 cargo containers. Named Ever Forward, the vessel draws 42’ (12.8 m) and is stuck in the mud in 24’ (7.3 m) of water. The ship’s owner had another cargo container that famously blocked the Suez Canal last year. More...
If tradespeople or other professionals are working on your boat, are they insured for any damage they cause by accident or negligence? It’s a serious question, given how many boats are damaged, burned to a crisp or even sunk in marina accidents. If the insurance companies are right, these workers are likely uninsured. If a boat’s used for water-skiing or other sport, does that activity need specific coverage? Let us tell you about the fine print. More...
Sovereign Boat Club is now expanding to Southeast Florida. This is a ground-floor opportunity because it will only have a few boats in the Miami to Palm Beach area. If you have a new boat or like-new boat from 27’ to 40’ (8.2 m to 12.1 m) SBC’s “shared access” program can earn money for you. Club members’ dues pay for your annual operating expenses and mitigate their depreciation. Email us here or call 727-200-3474.
