Michele Maggi has spent decades working on marine engines, their installations and selection. In 2014, he developed the first E-Motion diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system on a San Lorenzo 106’ (32.31 m) motoryacht. The company now offers parallel and serial hybrid systems, cutting fuel use and delivering extended quiet propulsion. Maggi explained how his system works to Capt. Steve in this video from the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. More...
Hunt Yachts combines traditional motoryacht functionality with modern design and construction techniques in the Ocean 63. Below the waterline, the bottom is solid fiberglass, while above the hullsides have foam coring infused with vinylester resin. The hull is finished in Awlgrip in the owner’s choice of color, which makes for a more attractive yacht and saves tens of thousands of dollars in maintenance costs over the lifetime of the boat. We tested the Sailfish 272CC with twin 150-hp Yamaha outboards and hit a top speed of 41.3 mph. Best cruise came at 3500 rpm where she ran 22.2 mph, burned 2.1 mpg and had a range of 327 statute miles. With the optional 200-hp Yamaha F200XCA upgrade, Sailfish says the boat runs 50.2 mph at WOT and has a best cruise at 3500 rpm as well, running 26.0 mph and getting 2.39 mpg for a range of just over 380 statute miles. The bigger engines retail for about $3,000 to $3,300 more per unit, so the buyer needs to decide if the boosts in speed and range are worth it. More...
