The 1991 Federal 10% Luxury tax killed most of big boat manufacturing in the U.S., and now another government-imposed law threatens to be the final nail in the offshore fishing coffin. NOAA has proposed a 10-mph speed limit for recreational boats over 35’ for most of the Atlantic seaboard. That means offshore center consoles, express fishing boats, and convertibles will be unable to realistically get to the fishing grounds and back in a day. It will effectively kill an industry in the months outlined above.
