According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, on May 29 it received a 911 call at 6:00 a.m. from a boater. He said he was about 10 miles east of the coast on the edge of the Gulf Stream in a rowboat and had lost a paddle. The 40-year-old man told rescue crews he had taken the rowboat from Fort Lauderdale Beach on Saturday night and began rowing east.
