Battery In or Out?
The Right Winter Prep
FREEZES, THEN CRACKS Prepping a vessel for the cold shouldn't include a costly surprise in the spring. Did she sit for a while before layup? Then even a short ride wasn't enough to secure her longevity. The difference between a battery that lasts 10 years and one that dies in two comes down to a few critical steps. Skip one, and she could freeze and crack. Find out the easy, essential checks.
HE SOLD OUT Famed designer Tom Fexas meets a salty figure who accuses him of betraying his own "K.I.S.S." philosophy. He explains why a fully outfitted vessel is a necessity today, even if she has A/C, TV, and an electric head. His honest admission on the true pleasure of convenience, detailing a life with hand-cranked engines, is surprisingly relatable.

C) If a passing agreement is reached by radiotelephone, whistle signals are optional, and the vessels should pass starboard to starboard as agreed.
The Inland Rules of the Road govern meeting situations like this on a river. Rule 14 allows vessels meeting head-on to agree to a starboard-to-starboard passing when safety permits, especially in clear waters like a river bend. Under Inland Rule 34(a), a passing agreement reached by radiotelephone is considered a proper signal of intent, and no whistle signals are required unless the radiotelephone agreement is not understood or a maneuver must be initiated immediately without time for radio.
