NO PROPS ASTERN The Yamaha 252SD runs on twin 1.9L jet drives, so nothing hangs under the swim platform, and her draft is just 19 inches. Combined output is 400 horsepower, good for 42.5 knots at 7,700 rpm in testing. DRiVE X handles slow-speed docking from the wheel. She seats 12 and carries 75 gallons of fuel.

Three Staterooms, Helm Up Top

Riviera 46 SMY interior and running

HELM UP TOP There aren’t many true flybridge boats in this size range, and the 46 SMY makes good use of the extra level. The only helm is upstairs, leaving more space in the salon, while the cockpit and raised mezzanine can handle anything from entertaining to light fishing. She also has three staterooms below.

GET HANDS-ON INSTRUCTION SBF boats are self-drive, but renters who need a refresher can train with a certified captain or instructor. Experienced boaters receive a handling evaluation before their first rental, while newcomers complete a boat-instruction course before taking the helm themselves.

TORNADO WATCH Fresh off dragging through mud and seaweed in shallow water, the Boomershines dock at Guntersville City Harbor as a severe storm moves in. Seven lines, eight fenders, and a marina garage code for shelter make up their plan if sirens start. They make it through the night, then it's back to breakfast.

Boat Theft

Prank, Publicity Stunt, or Malicious Theft?

Pathfinder stolen boat flyer

It began with the strange theft of a 58-year-old Bermuda 40. Within days, the story had taken a deadly turn.

Last week, a 1968 Hinckley Bermuda 40 was stolen from her slip in Jersey City and surfaced a few days later in Newport, RI. Police encountered 27-year-old Brendan Norris aboard the vessel. He reportedly opened fire, wounding an officer, and was killed in the exchange. Authorities are investigating his connection to the theft.
