Louis Vuitton Cup Final Highlights:

Britannia Rules the Waves

Louis Vuitton Final

LOUIS VUITTON CUP. As so often happens in sailboat races, the boat that wins the start wins the race. The image above was taken just a few seconds after the start of the final race and you can see that Britannia is going 36.9 knots compared to the 34.7 knots for the Italian boat, which appears to be sailing slightly higher.  The Brits were 35 meters ahead. The left side of the course was favored in most of the races and that's where the British went in each of the last three events — all of which they won. See the most exciting spectacle in sailboat racing as the two foiling boats exceed 45 knots.  Now, Britannia will challenge for the America's Cup.

Accidents of the Week

8 Accidents and the USCG to the Rescue

Eight accidents are reported upon this week, several involving rescues by the U.S. Coast Guard.

LESSONS LEARNED. Two of the accidents reported this week involved boats taking on and the operators radioing for help.  As seen in this photo, the yacht has yet to go down and in the second rescue of a powerboat, the USCG was able to get a pump aboard to save the vessel.  There's a message here.
